One day in mid-August, we have been to Noyama-kita & Rokudou-yama metropolitan natural preservation park at the southwestern foot of Sayama Hills, about 30km northwest of downtown Tokyo.
There is a reconstructed rural residence in the park. This photo may represent ordinary landscape in the Hills. But nowadays it is preserved only limited parts.
Frontal view of the reconstructed residence. This looks like as the residence of 'Kanta' from the famous Hayao Miyazaki's animation movie "My Neighbor Totoro". Both Aki and Tomo were very exciting to visit the place in their favorite movie!
There are various traditional wooden toys, such as spinning tops, Kendama, as well as Daruma-otoshi, in the residence. Visitors can play with them. These are good gadgets to evoke nostalgic moods.
There is another traditional toy, Takeuma as bamboo made hand-held stilts. It is difficult for Aki without training.
There is a typical 'Yato-da', paddy field in a narrow incised valley in the Hills behind the residence. 'Yato-da' is the oldest rice cultivation system with reservoir ponds at the head of valley and simple irrigation system along natural inclination of surface. A several Yayoi settlements are uncovered along the foot of the Hills. These archaeological findings suggest that the utilization of 'Yato-da' could be back to 2,000 years ago, in the era of the first agricultural society in the eastern Japan. However, it is difficult developing large-scale paddy field because of too narrow topography, major agricultural area was shifted to flat land. Likely all 'Yato-da' were abandoned until 1950-60's. After increasing of interest in natural conservation, historical and ecological significance of 'Yato-da' is rediscovered. Nowadays there are some resumed or reconstructed 'Yato-da' in the Hills, as well as here in the park.
There is also resumed 'Sato-yama', domesticated rural woodland, eco-system. Various wild plants and insects can be observed. Aki and Tomo were fascinating to chase dragonflies and butterflies. But unfortunately reservoir ponds and paddy fields were almost dried up after less rainfall. They were disappointing not to see flogs and aquatic insects as they expected.
This is a picture of black-rice plant, so-called 'ancient rice'. This variety has much purple-black pigment not only in endosperm but also n leaves and stems.
If you have a free day in visiting to Tokyo, you can enjoy oldie rural landscape with fresh air and rich green. It is only 1h30min trip by train and bus from Shinjuku or other terminal stations in downtown :)
