The Conference on 'Rediscovering Silk Route' concludes

Concerning with previous post >link
The international conference on 'Rediscovering Silk Route' has successfully concluded. Pakistani English newspaper Business Recorder reported on 08-09-2012.
Around 60 delegates from local and abroad including Japan, France, Portugal, UK, USA and Thailand participated. At the concluding ceremony Hazara University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Syed Sakhawat Shah was the chief guest. Vice Chancellor Dr Sakhawat Shah distributed certificates among the archaeological research scholars and presented a shield to Chief Organiser Dr Abdul Samad.
I hope more foreign scholars have interesting with this area, support the efforts of local archaeologists and make good collaboration with them.

The original article on Business Recorder is here: Conference on 'Rediscovering Silk Route' concludes

Cultural Resources left behind the Evacuated zone of FUKUSHIMA

11,Mar,2011, the largest Tsunami hit Fukushima No.1 Nuclear Plant. The plant lost its emergency maintenance system and finally spilled out radioactive by hydrogen explosion. Japanese government had blockaded contaminated area, more than 100,000 inhabitants was evacuated from their home.
After 1 year and half, 78,000 people are still evacuated from their home. Once Japanese government has claimed that people will be able to return within 1 year. But now, they say it is necessary at least 5 years- another authorities say it must be 50 years and more... The FUKUSHIMA issue is not yet over.

And there are issues concerning with cultural resources, heritage management. A lot of cultural resources, museum collections, including archaeological material and historic documents are still left behind the evacuated zone. No one can maintain their condition, because of lack of electricity or other infrastructure, difficulty of access by persons in charge of, etc. It is concerned about damage or loss of important and sensitive material under inappropriate condition.
(Jomon pottery left at the storehouse of Tomioka Town, in the evacuated zone)

In this August, curators in charge of cultural resources and heritage management in Futaba County started rescue project of those material. What a hard work, without air-condition in a storehouse during Summer days. Even there is no light inside the facilities.
They must work with radioactive protection suit. The area is still highly contaminated.
Checking Geiger-counter, then packing pottery into containers. It isn't able to move any highly contaminated material to outside of the evacuated zone, even if it is the declared important cultural property.
In this time, they have rescued, transported series of  Late Feudal Era, so-called Edo period historic document and drawing maps (all original, written by ink on traditional papers), Early Modern photographs, typical archaeological and folklore materials. Finally those have been packed into 130 containers and removed to outside of the evacuated zone. All containers and material were checked and cleared their contamination level.
(a curator interviewed by TV crews, all they wore radioactive protection suits...)
This is a great achievement, but not a goal. There are still left behind a lot of cultural resources under inappropriate condition. No monuments nor architecture can remove to outside of evacuate zone. Prolonged evacuation may affect to maintain intangible cultural properties such as ritual ceremony, music in local festival, etc.
An accident on a nuclear plant affect broad range, and it destruct, delete local communities in a moment, nature, landscape, history and residents...
We must reconsider what will happen when an accident occurs. Because there is no PERFECT SAFETY on any artificial system.

取り残された文化財/ cultural resources left behind the evacuated zone of FUKUSHIMA

Buddhism arts and sites in Pakistan/

The 1st international conference on 'Rediscovering Silk Route' is held in Hazara University at Mashera, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan on 5th-7th September 2012. The five days cultural study tour of Silk Route (Mansehra to China) is held on 8th -13th September 2012, following the conference.
As well-known, northern part of Pakistan is very rich in Buddhism heritage, including 2 UNESCO World Heritage site such as Taxila, and Buddhist Ruins of Takht-i-Bahi and Neighbouring City Remains at Sahr-i-Bahlol. These sites are studied and conserved by many Pakistani scholars.
Since 2001, destruction of Bamiyan Great Buddhas, most of non-Islamic people consider that the context of the case is very religious and fanatic. However it is imprudent.
If you visit a Buddhist site in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, you can see many local people also visit the site. There are teachers and students of Madrasah in Buddhism arts section of local museum. All they are Muslim, and almost are Pashtun, which Taliban movement is originated from. But they, Pashtun ordinary people respect those Buddhism sites and arts as common heritage of human, as well as 'Western People' does (as they believed so). And there are many Pashtun scholars those engaging study and conservation of Buddhism heritage.
We must know and support their effort. If you say 'Muslim is barbarian, because they want to destroy heritage of other religions', it would encourage only people those want to make dissension in the world.
I pray for the success of the conference.

(School of Cultural Heritage and Creative Sciences)に所属するという興味深い組織になっています。

Hachikoku-yama Archaeological Museum and Workshop/

Last Sunday (19-Aug-2012), we were coming to 'Hachikoku-yama Taiken-no-sato' in Higashi-murayama City, Tokyo. This facility have constructed as the municipal archaeological center for conservation and exhibition of excavated archaeological material.

The most significant feature of the center is that it has various experimental program concerning with nature, archaeology or folklore of the local, and holds workshop everyday! These are origami arts, hand crafts of paper, clay and acorn for short course experiment. These are very simple so that even small children can easily enjoy it.
Children are delighted with colorful paper crafts of Jomon wild boar and Jomon stag beetle.
However those craft works were slightly difficult for Tomo. He would like to play with these wooden toys.
Tomo enjoyed Jomon Dogu, ceramic figurine refitting with magnet.

Aki was fascinating with this game- bagatelle with bow!The center keeps excavated material from Shimo-yakebe archaeological site which contained rich organic material of Jomon Age, such as crates, japan lacquer wares as well as bows. Therefore the museum created this game featured with bow.
Reconstructed Jomon bows are represented in the photo above. Original excavated pottery from Shimo-yakebe site are represented in the photo below (Late Jomon: ca.4,000-2,400BP). Another photo below is a huge amount of husks of Japanese walnut (Juglans ailantifolia) uncovered from Jomon plant food processing workshop beside buried channel.
Hachikoku-yama is the eastern part of the Sayama Hills and very popular as the model of 'Shichikoku-yama' in the famous Hayao Miyazaki's animation movie 'My Neighbor Totoro'. So- Tomo became Totoro.
